Adoptions and Involuntary Termination of Parental Rights Cases


This data brief includes information on involuntary termination of parental rights cases and adoptions handled through CYF. TPR petitions and completed adoption data from January 2014 through December 2017 were examined.

  1. I found it interesting that the May 2014-December 2017 TPR Filings Report revealed that between 0-1yrs of age made up about 30% of the total TPR cases. Also, the dramatic decline in TPR cases as the children moved toward 18yrs of age. At first glance I thought, “Wow, it is sad that young children (infants) are so potentially adversely affected by their natural parents; subjected to the irresponsibly and lack of care and/or safety capacities of their ‘natural parents’ or ‘primary caregivers’…”. But then I thought about the brighter side of the seemingly “gloomy” statistical report. The earlier the age of the children that are being removed from the custody or care of “unfit” natural parents or caregivers, the lower the risk of further harm to that growing child. I really appreciate the thought provoking research article.
